L-INSIGHT held Australia-International Collaboration Program (Feb 28 & Mar 3, 2025)

L-INSIGHT held Australia-International Collaboration Program on February 28 and March 3, 2025. Four L-INSIGHT Fellows from the 4th term visited the University of Melbourne. Through discussions with local students and researchers from various fields, they had the opportunity to gain a long-term perspective on the relationship between their education and research and social issues.

With Professor Ogawa in St. Gilda

On the first day, the 4th Kyoto University-University of Melbourne Joint Meeting, co-hosted by the Faculty of Science, University of Melbourne, and Kyoto University L-INSIGHT, was held at BioScience 1.

The joint meeting was divided into three parts. In each part, L-INSIGHT fellows and researchers from the University of Melbourne presented their research themes and how they address social issues. The venue was filled with members of the laboratories and research groups that hosted the online seminar held in early November 2024, and lively discussions took place. Ms. Mika Shimoda of the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Science served as the MC.

After the joint meeting, participants moved to University House for a welcome reception hosted by the University of Melbourne. At the beginning, Professor Adrian Little, Pro Vice Chancellor (International) of the University of Melbourne, delivered a welcome speech, expressing his support for the Japan-Australia-India Roundtable, held by Kyoto University in mid-February as part of its invitation program, and his expectations for future cooperation and development. Professor Fuyuki Ishikawa, Vice President of Kyoto University (Research Support), Program Manager L-INSIGHT, responded with words of gratitude.

On the second day, two lectures were given to us to deepen our understanding of Australian research culture through examples of actual research. Prof. Akihiro Ogawa (Asia Institute Sidney Myer Asia Centre) introduced the dialectical process in participatory action research and Australia’s promotion of research engagement. It was an opportunity to unlearn about research in society and society in research. Additionally, Dr. Pradeep Taneja (same institution), who is originally from India, spent time in China in the 1980s, and is currently based in Australia, delivered a lecture on economic security in the Indo-Pacific region, focusing on China, India, and Australia. The discussion centred on the theme of ‘an opened Japan from the perspective of the sea.’

Furthermore, the fellows visited individual researchers to discuss potential collaborative research and partnerships.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Professor Alex Johnson, the former Dean of International at the Faculty of Science, University of Melbourne; Mika Shimoda; and the lecturers who co-organized this program.

(L-INSIGHT, Associate Professor Asa Nakano)
